Our Own Gold Medalist

While at Grandma and Grandpa’s last month, the kids and their cousins engaged in some friendly arm wrestling. Everyone was laughing and some of the adults even joined in. It was all in fun, but when Sam came dangerously close to losing to a girl cousin, he decided something had to be done. Then and there he decided that he would start working out. Among other things, like running up and down the stairs over and over again, he’s been doing push-ups — adding one more each day. I’ve been impressed with his determination.

Today in Sam’s P.E. class, they had a little contest of sit-ups and push-ups. In Olympic fashion, the students were going for bronze, silver, and gold. A lot of the students were able to max out on the sit ups (80). But then it was time for push ups. They were doing them to a tape that counted for them: “Down (pause) Up (pause) One. Down (pause) Up (pause) Two…”, etc. I wish I’d been a fly on the wall in the gymnasium. If you’ve seen my boys, you know that they are rather, um, should we say… spindly. But like I said, Sam has been working out and he’s up to 25 push-ups a day, adding one every day. Even so, you can imagine my surprise when Sam came home and told us he’d taken the Gold with a whopping SIXTY-NINE push-ups! His competition finally dropped out at 67. Sam said they were both shaking as they got to the end. Way to go, Sam!!

My boys — Skinny but Strong!
